• Glaucoma Cure – What Are the Options?

Glaucoma cure – is it possible? Unfortunately not. The good news, however, is that glaucoma responds well to treatment if it is detected in its early stages. Failure to treat glaucoma can result in vision loss and, sometimes, total blindness. This disease develops when pressure builds up in the eye because of damage to the optic nerve.

Common causes of glaucoma are eye injuries, complications arising from other illnesses, a tumor on the eye, or after surgical procedures on the eyes. Medications like corticosteroids can also lead to the development of glaucoma.

Glaucoma cure is not yet available so, instead, we need to focus on what treatments are available for this disease. Glaucoma manifests itself in four different types, but each one responds to the same treatment.

Glaucoma can be treated in the following ways: with the use of eye-drops or medication. If neither of these work, the last option is surgery. Before the days of eye-health awareness campaigns, many people with glaucoma became blind. Thankfully, today, this is not the case.

The first treatment option is eye-drops that relieve pressure on the eyes by decreasing fluid production and stimulating drainage. If there is no improvement, medication is the next option. Medication can often work very well, but many patients report side-effects.

If there is no reduction of pressure in the eyes, it will be probably be necessary to undergo a surgical procedure. Surgical procedures to treat glaucoma involve two methods. The first is laser surgery, and the other is a conventional method.

It is up to the ophthalmic surgeon to decide on which surgical procedure will best suit each individual patient. Whilst surgery will eliminate the pressure on the eyes, it will not reverse any loss of vision that has already developed.

The only way to avoid serious glaucoma is to realize the importance of having eye check-ups on a regular basis. As they say, prevention is better than cure, and this certainly applies to glaucoma.
