Glaucoma is an eye disease that involves high press in the eyes. This condition can gradually damage one’s vision and even lead to permanent vision loss. Until now, most doctors prescribe glaucoma medicines for treatment, either eye drops or oral medications. This is the commonest way to control glaucoma. In detail, these medicines can effectively control eye pressure at a low level. At the side of patients, medicines are believed to be the safest solution. Glaucoma patients have to maintain these medicines, in case of the buildup of pressure in the eyes. However, medicines used to control glaucoma are always associated with some side effects on the other hand. Some of those side effects are unnoticeable while others are significant.

With the basic knowledge of glaucoma itself, there is still another solution to this disease. In the eye, there is a clear fluid that flows through the passages. Excessive eye pressure will be caused if these passages get blocked which leads to fluid buildup in the eye. This pressure buildup in the eye will finally cause glaucoma, potentially damaging the optic nerve. In general, there are two types of glaucoma: primary open angle and acute angle-closed.

Another treatment for glaucoma is laser surgery. During such a laser surgery for glaucoma, the surgeon will make holes and use them to shrink the clogged areas in the eye. The obvious purpose is to decrease the abnormally high eye pressure by draining the fluid in the eye. In detail, the surgeon will use a tiny but powerful light beam to make such holes. Since glaucoma can affect only one eye, glaucoma laser surgery may treat a sole eye.

Glaucoma laser surgery can be performed in a doctor’s office or in a clinic. In some cases, eye grittiness may occur. Another possible complication is swelling eye or eyes. Light sensitivity and blurry vision are also potential. It is fortunate that these complications are temporary that they will go away in several days. During the healing process, eye drops or oral medications are sometimes needed.

Glaucoma is the No 2 cause of blindness worldwide after cataracts. Glaucoma attacks the optical nerve and causes chronic and progressive deterioration. The disease is diagnosed by testing eye pressure. While blindness caused by cataracts is generally curable, this is not the case with glaucoma. That is why it is very important to know how to treat Glaucoma.

People who have glaucoma have to undergo lifetime treatment to avoid blindness. Of course, this long treatment will cost a lot of money. Many people can not afford this kind of treatment.

The vision of people with glaucoma usually deteriorates over time due to disruption to the optic nerve as indicated by elevated eye pressure. Glaucoma attacks people 40 years old and over. The disease can be inherited from parents or grandparents.

Using steroids, such as certain eye drops, asthma inhalers and rheumatism or arthritis medicines, can make a person susceptible to the disease. Those with severe cases of myopia and hypermethropia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension or migraine can also develop glaucoma.

To treat Glaucoma can be done through many kinds of ways. Below are some tips that you may practice for Glaucoma treatment.

1. Eye Screening

Regular eye screening is recommended. Prevention is better than cure. Glaucoma screening can prevent blindness.

2. Avoid Stress

Stress is also another cause of Glaucoma. When people are diagnosed they have Glaucoma they feel stressed. Stress just makes Glaucoma worse. Stress also can cause eye strain on the eyes. Avoid stress if you want to cure Glaucoma since stress is useless.

3. Eyesight Vitamins

In fact, you can not find cures for Glaucoma. However, there are a lot of treatments for Glaucoma. Some of those treatments are natural. One of natural ways to treat Glaucoma is called vitamin therapy. Vitamin therapy is a kind of therapy which is intended at restoring eyesight by consuming enough eyesight vitamins. The main vitamins for eyesight consist of vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

4. Start Healthy Life

Vitamins and nutrients are very important for your eyes. A balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables can restore your eyesight. Regular exercise is also necessary. In other words, healthy eyesight starts from healthy life.

As recently as 40 years ago, a diagnosis of glaucoma meant certain blindness. Today, with the miracles of modern science, it is a treatable disease that assures the senior citizen who inherits it a full life of good eyesight.

But what is glaucoma?

It is a progressive disease in which the ocular pressure increases, sometimes to the extent that the optic nerve (that connects the eye to the brain) is damaged and sight is impaired or totally lost. But some people develop glaucoma with low eye pressure, and those cases are more difficult to diagnose because there aren’t any symptoms until the visual field is already damaged.

There are two common types of glaucoma… open angle and closed angle. Closed angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage area for the aqueous humor (fluid in the front part of the eye) is blocked. Because the eye is a closed structure, the excess fluid cannot flow out of the eye if the angle is blocked. Fluid pressure within the eye will increase, pushing against the optic nerve and potentially causing damage.

Open angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage angles in the eye become less efficient; pressure builds gradually and sometimes without symptoms. In this kind of glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve can occur so slowly that the patient is unaware her sight is becoming impaired. This issue is the reason senior citizens are cautioned to have annual eye exams with a qualified ophthalmologist who will check the eye pressure and perform additional tests if intraocular pressure exceeds normal limits (20-22mmHg).

Acute closed angle glaucoma occurs when intraocular pressure builds up suddenly. Seniors are cautioned to contact their ophthalmologist immediately if any of the following symptoms occur:

blurred vision

severe eye pain;

headache;

rainbow-colored halos around lights;

nausea and vomiting

Some people are at higher risk for glaucoma and need to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist every 1-2 years. Those at risk for glaucoma include senior citizens with the following characteristics or issues:

elevated eye pressure;

family history of glaucoma;

African ancestry;

nearsightedness;

past eye injuries;

diabetes

The good news is that treatment is relatively simple for the majority of glaucoma victims. Daily eye drops keeps the condition under good control for many patients, and the optic nerve remains undamaged.

Some require laser surgery to create additional drainage for the aqueous humor. Again treatment results are generally good for such glaucoma patients, and continued daily eye drops keep the condition under control.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology provides additional information for the many variations of the basic condition known as glaucoma.

Glaucoma cure – is it possible? Unfortunately not. The good news, however, is that glaucoma responds well to treatment if it is detected in its early stages. Failure to treat glaucoma can result in vision loss and, sometimes, total blindness. This disease develops when pressure builds up in the eye because of damage to the optic nerve.

Common causes of glaucoma are eye injuries, complications arising from other illnesses, a tumor on the eye, or after surgical procedures on the eyes. Medications like corticosteroids can also lead to the development of glaucoma.

Glaucoma cure is not yet available so, instead, we need to focus on what treatments are available for this disease. Glaucoma manifests itself in four different types, but each one responds to the same treatment.

Glaucoma can be treated in the following ways: with the use of eye-drops or medication. If neither of these work, the last option is surgery. Before the days of eye-health awareness campaigns, many people with glaucoma became blind. Thankfully, today, this is not the case.

The first treatment option is eye-drops that relieve pressure on the eyes by decreasing fluid production and stimulating drainage. If there is no improvement, medication is the next option. Medication can often work very well, but many patients report side-effects.

If there is no reduction of pressure in the eyes, it will be probably be necessary to undergo a surgical procedure. Surgical procedures to treat glaucoma involve two methods. The first is laser surgery, and the other is a conventional method.

It is up to the ophthalmic surgeon to decide on which surgical procedure will best suit each individual patient. Whilst surgery will eliminate the pressure on the eyes, it will not reverse any loss of vision that has already developed.

The only way to avoid serious glaucoma is to realize the importance of having eye check-ups on a regular basis. As they say, prevention is better than cure, and this certainly applies to glaucoma.

Learn to do simple exercise to treat glaucoma or prevent it.

Can vitamins and supplements prevent and treat glaucoma? You're at risk of blinding glaucoma if you work on a computer. Learn what to look for when you buy vitamins.

Glaucoma is a sneaky condition that can cause blindness. It is a lot like having high pressure in your eyes. The key to treatment is early diagnosis and prevention. It is sad to think that almost all people who lose their eyesight to glaucoma didn’t have to. Glaucoma is easily preventable in virtually every case.

Don’t think that just because you are young that you are safe. Even babies can get glaucoma. The fastest growing group of people to develop glaucoma and blindness are in the twenty year old to thirty year old range. Long hours at a computer raise the pressure and swelling in your eyes and don’t allow them to drain normally. Many people resort to drug treatment to increase drainage of the fluid. The next step is laser surgery to open up drainage ducts in the eyes.

People of Asian descent and African Americans are at the highest risk of developing the disease. People over forty are always at risk and should see their eye doctor every year for a glaucoma check. People with frequent migraines or headaches should be checked yearly. People who work outside in the sun or at a computer should be checked yearly. If you are diabetic you are at an increased risk. If you’ve ever had an eye injury or if you have ever used cortisone or steroid medications, you’re at higher risk.

So, how can you save your eyesight before glaucoma creeps up on you? Early recognition and prevention are key. See your eye doctor if you feel overly sensitive to light, are having more frequent headaches, or if you fall into one of the higher risk categories listed above.

If you are diagnosed, your ophthalmologist will probably give you a strict regimen of eye drops, medications and laser treatments that you must follow to hopefully keep from going blind. The medications must never be missed. The eye drops must be administered exactly as prescribed. You must never stop treatment, even if you can’t tell that there is anything wrong.

There are alternatives to medicinal and surgical prevention of glaucoma. Vitamin C is very effective way to prevent and fight glaucoma and other vascular disorders of the eye. Vitamin C strengthens the eye’s vascular system. The fluid in the eye requires over 25% higher levels of vitamin C than the levels needed in our blood. Vitamin C keeps fluid thin and mobile. Blurred vision, poor night vision, glaucoma and cataracts can all be helped by taking higher doses of vitamin C.

Buffered vitamin C powder is a popular way to get enough vitamin C without upsetting the stomach or damaging the teeth. Speak with your doctor about how much vitamin C you should take to help prevent or treat glaucoma. When you buy vitamins, consider the price per dosage. Remember, the best vitamins are the ones that you actually take, so choose a form of vitamin C that is easiest for you to take regularly.

Glaucoma is a disease whereby the eye becomes compromised and the optic nerve becomes damaged. As the disease causes vision loss over an extended period of time, sometimes with no easily identifiable symptoms, it is often referred to, in a colloquial sense, as the ’sneak thief of sight’. However, glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and even blindness worldwide, and while advances in medical treatment for vision ailments are forever progressing, no such elucidation is available to restore previous vision quality once the disease has damaged the optic area. However, if the presence of glaucoma in the eye is detected at the early stages of development, it is possible to impede the progression with medication, and if necessary, surgical procedures.

The disease is traditionally divided into two groups; open and closed angle glaucoma. The most common type is open angle glaucoma, being characterised by a fluid build up which causes intraocular pressure, leading to damage to the optic nerve and impaired vision. The fluid build up is a result of the disease reducing the effectiveness of the eyes filtration area, known as the trabecular network, therefore the liquid that usually forms in the front section of the eye cannot drain to the normal canals. For open angle glaucoma, reduced vision is usually the first symptom experienced. As this type of the glaucoma progresses slowly, with no apparent warning signs, many individuals who contract it may experience severe vision loss before being diagnosed. This is why it is so important to have regular eye exams with qualified professionals.

In comparison, closed angle glaucoma often appears abruptly – the effects are uncomfortable, sometimes agonising. However, as this type of glaucoma is characterised with painful symptoms, as a result of a rapid accumulation of liquid creating intraocular pressure, it serves as an early warning sign for many who seek the services of an experience optometrist, often before permanent damage occurs. If you are suffering from blurred vision, severe eye pain, headaches, the appearance of rainbows around lights, nausea or vomiting, these are classic signs of closed angle glaucoma and an appointment with an eye specialist should be made immediately.

Optometrists diagnose glaucoma by investigating the intraocular pressure with the eye, visual field tests and optic nerve head appearance. According to medical journals, the key to diagnosing glaucoma is to carefully examine the optic nerve, even if the eye pressure is normal. Computer assisted field tests can highlight the extent of peripheral visual field loss, while at the same time, show if the treatment is slowing the process. The usual medical response to treating glaucoma is through the use of eye drops. Sometimes, however, laser surgery is required to reduce the intraocular pressure. Early detection will greatly influence the type of treatment that will be required.

It is suggested that people over the age of 40 should have their eyes examined for the symptoms of glaucoma every year. Additionally, those who smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of the disease are at a higher risk of contracting glaucoma and should have regular checks from an early age. Don’t let the ’sneak thief of sight’ take away your vision.

Paterson Burn Optometrists have been in the Waikato, New Zealand, as Balfour Irvine and Webster and Lawrence and Andrews since 1925. There is over 80 years of history of providing eye care prior to the merger of the two practices in 1995 to form Paterson Burn Optometrists. Seven locations within the Waikato all provide the full scope of modern optometry including therapeutic qualified optometrist able to treat anterior eye infections. Six of our 8 optometrist have undertaken the post graduate studies needed to allow treatment of eye infections. Our many services include retinal camera fundus imaging, glaucoma testing, visual field investigation, tear duct syringing and punctual plugs.

We fit all types of contact lenses including the extended over night wear contact lens as well as multifocal contact lenses giving both distance and reading vision. With the introduction of a corneal topographer we also offer orthokeratology. This is where a contact lens is worn over night to reshape the eye to allow clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Paterson Burn Optometrists

Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the U.S. Those susceptible to this disease need to be regularly checked by an eye doctor.

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye caused by damage to the optic nerve, usually due to high pressure inside the eye. When left untreated, this increase in pressure can gradually cause loss of vision, starting with small, imperceptible blind spots which progress to tunnel vision and then blindness. It is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the United States. The risk of glaucoma increases dramatically with age, however it can affect any age group.

To understand what glaucoma is, it is useful to understand a bit about the structure of the eye. The colored part of the eye is the iris which controls the amount of light entering the eye, opening and closing the pupil. The iris, cornea and lens are immersed in a fluid called aqueous humor. This fluid is constantly filtered and rejuvenated in the eye with the discharge occurring via small drainage tubes known as the trabecular meshwork.

Glaucoma occurs when aqueous humor is not adequately drained, which allows pressure to build. The increased pressure impacts the optic nerve and slowly destroys it. This results in dead spots as information is not correctly sent by the nerve to the brain.

Open-angle glaucoma progresses slowly and accounts for more than 90% of cases. It’s called “open angle” because the angle between the iris and the cornea is open so that there is some drainage of aqueous humor. In narrow angle glaucoma the opening is narrow which inhibits proper drainage, or can degenerate to the point where it is closed.

Congenital glaucoma occurs in infants and is the result of incomplete development of the drainage channels of the eye in the developing fetus. Surgery can correct the defects or they can be treated with a combination of medicine and surgery.

There is a rare form of open-angle glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, which is different in that people with this form of glaucoma have optic nerve damage not caused by excess pressure in the eye. Those at higher risk for this form of glaucoma are people with a familial history of normal tension glaucoma, and people with a history of systemic heart disease such as arrhythmia.

Glaucoma can also result from injuries, infections and ocular tumors. It is also more prevalent in people with cataracts and diabetes. The most common cause of vision loss in all forms of glaucoma is optic nerve damage. There are many causes of glaucoma including trauma to the eye, or age related tissue damage that pushes the iris forward blocking normal drainage. It is also likely that many forms and types of glaucoma are based on inherited traits. Researchers have identified defective genes that cause glaucoma.

Glaucoma disease is a disease which attacks the vision nerve and can develop to permanent blindness if it is not cured in time. Perhaps, some people have heard the words “Glaucoma disease” but only few people understand what these words mean. In glaucoma, the nerve fibers die off at an increased rate. This condition can lead to loss of vision.

The main cause for this disease is excess pressure in the eye. The pressure in the eye causes damage to the optic nerve which carries vision to the brain. This damage affects our side or peripheral vision and then slowly spreads to involve larger and larger areas of our vision. However, it usually spares our central vision until late in the course of the disease. Any nerve damage that happens is irreversible, so preventing damage is the key.

Glaucoma disease can be diagnosed. A full eye examination consists of a number of standard tests to measure the overall health and functioning of the eyes. If your doctor suspects glaucoma, he or she orders further tests. If these confirm the diagnosis, you will receive instructions about how to reduce the pressure in the eye.

There are some types of glaucoma. For this article, we will only focus on open-angle glaucoma and closed-angle glaucoma.

Open-angle glaucoma, the most popular form of glaucoma, affects about three million Americans. Half of them do not even realize they have it. There are no symptoms at first — vision stays normal, and there is no pain. If the glaucoma remains untreated, people may begin to notice that although they see things in front of them clearly, they miss objects to the side and out of the corners of their eyes.

Open-angle glaucoma gets its name because the angle that allows fluid to drain out of the anterior chamber is open. However, for unknown reasons, the fluid passes too slowly through the meshwork drain. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye increases. Unless the pressure at the front of the eye is controlled, it can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss.

In closed-angle glaucoma, the fluid at the front of the eye cannot reach the angle and leave the eye because the angle is blocked by part of the iris (the part that makes eyes blue, brown or green). You can imagine this occurring much like a sheet of paper floating near a drain. If the paper suddenly drops over the opening, the flow is quickly blocked.

Glaucoma disease is a very scary disease since there are no symptoms. However, some experts say diet rich in fish oil may help avoid glaucoma. This idea is based on surveys of Eskimos that indicate they have very low rates of open-angle glaucoma. Another smart way to prevent Glaucoma is healthy lifestyle. Eating fresh vegetables and having regular exercise can reduce the risk of suffering from Glaucoma.

It used to be that nobody new what glaucoma was. Old age meant losing one’s senses, whether it was hearing or sight. However, because of increased research, doctors and scientists now know that glaucoma is a serious condition that not only affects the elderly but the young too. Because of this, there glaucoma TV spots have become more and more common. Because of such media attention, people not only know the signs to look for when it comes to glaucoma, but they can seek treatment before they lose all vision.

What is glaucoma? Well, it is a condition that occurs when there is too much fluid pressure in the eye. This then wrecks havoc on the optic nerve’s fibers. The humor or fluid that is produces in the eye is supposed to drain, but there is a blockage of sorts, and this in turn results in build-up. If glaucoma happens, then the fibers are forever damaged and blind spots will occur. Sometimes these spots are not easily noticeable, and this is why glaucoma TV spots are so important: they increase awareness before all sight is lost.

Vision loss is generally slow, to symptoms may not pop up until the condition is well underway. Thus, once you reach a certain age, you should start being checked for this on a regular basis. The following symptoms will appear once glaucoma has reached its middle stages: eye pain, blurred vision, headaches, nausea, and light perception issues (i.e. it will look as if there are rings or light or rainbows around anything that is lit up). The glaucoma tv spots recommend that people seek out regular eye exams to protect people from developing glaucoma or experiencing permanent damage to their eyes. If the person says that they have been experiencing high levels of pressure in their eye, doctors will then begin testing for glaucoma using vision tests. Many eye exams will discover if a person has an optic nerve that seems a bit out of whack.

After a doctor suspects glaucoma, he or she will begin a combination of tests to determine the extent of the issue. Doctors will use pressure-type tests that check fluid drainage, evaluation tests of the optic nerve, and will use tests that look into overall visual perception. If one eye has glaucoma, the other eye will also be at risk. However, it is entirely possible to only have the condition in one eye.

Glaucoma is most commonly treated with a variety of eye drops. These drops help the eye to control or stop fluid production and this can in turn help the eye with the drainage of fluids. An individual might use one kind of eye drop or many kinds, depending on the type and severity of glaucoma. Additionally, laser treatments are becoming more and more popular, especially when it comes to fixing the drainage area of the eye.
